Community Health Promotion Calendar

We offer many events and activities such as Social & Health Talks, Blood Pressure Clinics, Tai Chi For Health, Art Classes, and a support group for Diabetes.  

SEnior socials

 ​Senior Social and Health Talks occur the third Tuesday of each month and feature guest speakers on health/wellness issues, birthday celebrations and time to socialize! Refreshments are provided! A Nurse is In/Blood Pressure Clinic is also offered. No registration required. 

​All talks are held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2730 East 31st Street, Minneapolis.
Navigating Alzheimer's Disease 
Tuesday, March 21, 10:30 – 11:30 am
Learn practical tools and what to expect when a family member has Alzheimer’s disease. Presenter Marty Jones is a retired chaplain and educator who worked in memory care. She is passionate about sharing her experiences and supporting people  who are living with Alzheimer’s. 

Minnesota 150: The People, Places and Things that Shape Our State
Tuesday, April 18, 10:30 – 11:30 am
To mark the 150th anniversary of Minnesota's statehood in 2008, the Minnesota Historical Society asked the public for their opinions on the people, places, things and events that have shaped our state. Thousands of submissions were winnowed down to 150 entries that resulted in an exhibit and a book. Join this conversation with Kate Roberts, Senior Exhibit Developer with the Minnesota Historical Society to learn how the MN150 were chosen, which topics made the cut, and which didn't. You'll be surprised!

The Senior LinkAge Line
Tuesday, May 16, 10:30 – 11:30 am
Learn about Medicare and health insurance options or ask questions about housing and support services in your neighborhood!  A speaker from Trellis (formerly MN Metro Area Agency on Aging), explains how the Senior Linkage Line connects consumers to programs that can help you live independently longer. 

Free From Clutter
Tuesday, June 20, 10: 30 – 11:30 am
Learn routines which will help reduce clutter in your home. Certified Professional Organizer, Christine Daves, will show you how to  identify which items merit space in your home, and then where to place the items to make finding, and putting away, easy.  Also learn how and where to pass on things you don't want any more.

Best Foot Forward

Tuesday, July 18, 10:30 -11:30 am
Our feet are one of the most often used parts of our bodies, but most of us neglect and mistreat them. Learn about preventing foot injuries, increasing circulation in your feet and toes, and what to consider in selecting the right foot care.  Presented by Certified Footcare nurse, Angela Weldon.

Tai Chi for health

Tuesdays from 9:30 - 10:30 am
Classes currently paused. Tai Chi will resume on March 21st. 


Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors Program sponsors Tai Chi classes for older adults. Classes cost $5/each. (Lower income seniors may qualify for discounts.)

The instructor is Howard Root, a retired Community Education Specialist. The classes vary between sitting and standing and include slow, easy movements.

LAUGHTER YOGA

Try our free monthly Laughter Yoga class! Sustained, unconditional laughter promotes deep breathing, improved mood, and reduced stress. Volunteer & Service Coordinator, Julia Ockuly, will lead the class in some simple exercises which will have you laughing in no time. This activity can be done in a seated position and is appropriate for all fitness levels. 

Classes are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month,

Upcoming dates are April 19, May 17, June 21. Classes are held from 10:30 - 11:00 am.

technology Clinic

Do you have questions about your computer or cell phone? Need help with social media, sharing photos, video chatting, or internet security? Join us for a free technology clinic for older adults! Bring your device, and volunteers will be on-hand to help you with your questions.

The event will be held in the Community Room at Trinity Apartments, 2800 E 31st St., Minneapolis, May 31, 10:30 am - 12:00 pm.

Solos resource group

A growing portion of the 60+ population is comprised of “solos”, individuals who cannot or choose not to rely on family or friends to help them navigate life events and make health decisions. If you feel the term solo applies to you, we invite you to join our group! Share resources on creating a health decision safety net and backup plan, and join a supportive and welcoming community. 

Meetings are on the 4th Wednesday of each month, from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm 
at the Brackett Field Park Community Center, 2728 S. 39th Ave., Minneapolis. 

Upcoming meetings are March 22, April 26, May 24, and June 28.

Diabetes support group

Do you have  Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes? Interested in health information and a friendly community? Diabetes Support Group meetings are facilitated by Beth Peltzer, MSW. New members are always welcome!

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month from 1:30 – 2:30 pm in the Community Room at Trinity Apartments, 2800 E 31st St., Minneapolis.

Upcoming meetings are
March 8, April 12, May 10, and June 14. 

CREATIVITY AND WELLNESS 
ART CLASSES​

This 3-week class uses art projects and the creative process to promote positive health. Creative expression can boost immune systems, increase happiness, and improve problem solving. Classes are taught by Ruth Mason, an artist, painter, and mural designer.
 

Serenity Landscapes:
Wednesday, April 19, 2:00 - 3:30 pm

Visualize a landscape, and use that imagery to create a painting on a canvas board. Bring the finished painting home to promote serenity and calm.

Windows of Trust- Experimentation Exercises: Wednesday, April 26, 2:00 - 3:30 pm
Use bleeding tissue paper to make colorful abstractions on watercolor paper. The resulting work can be embellished to create a multi-media landscape. The process of creating this abstract piece can help to relieve anxiety.

Celebration Still Lifes:
Wednesday, May 3, 2:00 - 3:30 pm.
Sketch, paint, and then devour desserts! Using pictures and real treats, create a still life, and then eat your subject matter. Create community using food and art.
 
Participants are welcome to attend all three classes, or to attend individual classes. Class size is limited to 12 participants. Register by emailing Julia at

LEATHER-CRAFTING CLASS

Leatherworker Robbyn Overall will assist you as you create original designs on a wristband, bookmark and key chain using acrylic paint, stencils, and your imagination. No sewing required! 

Choose either Wednesday, May 17 or Wednesday, May 24. Classes are 2:00 - 3:30 pm.  ​Classes cost $5 for materials. Class size is limited.

NEW CHRONIC/MULTIPLE DISEASE SUPPORT GROUP

Do you struggle with chronic and/or multiple diseases? Could you use some support and new ideas on how to live with your disease(s) and improve your health outcomes? We hope to offer the first support group  soon at St. Peder’s Lutheran Church, 4600 E. 42nd Street, Minneapolis.
